Chirimen was originally a woven fabric woven with silk plain weave, which is a high-end silk woven fabric used as a dyed fabric. Currently, there are chirimen made of rayon, polyester and silk.
Chirimen is a non-twisted raw silk with no twist in the warp, and left and right strong twisted raw silk as the weft. Normally, two right-twisted and two left-twisted are woven alternately and woven in a plain weave.
The general chirimen is called "Yokochirimen" because it uses strong twisted yarn for the weft to give grain. On the other hand, the one that uses strong twisted yarn for the warp to produce grain is called "Tatechirimen". The one that uses strong twisted yarn for both warp and weft is called "warp and weft crepe", and georgette is a typical fabric.
There are two ways to apply wrinkles to woven fabrics. "One-sided wrinkles (one-sided shrinkage)" are wrinkled in the vertical direction. "Both wrinkles (both shrinkage)" are made by alternately driving right-twisted and left-twisted strong-twisted yarns into the weft to produce evenly fine wrinkles.
Chirimen is sometimes called the former as "one-sided chirimen" and the latter as "both chirimen". Most of the chirimen is plain weave, and the plain weave chirimen is called "plain chirimen".
